The first color images of a European Mars lander's crash site are revealing new details about the spacecraft's unsuccessful touchdown attempt last month. The lander, known as Schiaparelli, slammed hard into the Red Planet on Oct. 19, apparently after its descent-slowing thrusters failed to fire for long enough, officials with the European Space Agency (ESA) have said. NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) quickly spotted Schiaparelli's remains with its low-resolution camera, and then imaged the impact site in greater detail last week using its sharp-eyed High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera.
